Lascuña edges Que

Hitting the fairways is important at Villamor

-

Tony Lascuña switched back to his old, reliable Odyssey putter and put away Angelo Que to reach the quarterfinals of the ICTSI Villamor Match Play Championship at the Villamor Golf Club in Pasay City Wednesday.

The 52-year-old four-time Order of Merit champion and Que, a Japan and Asian Tour regular, finished tied after 18 holes.

They returned to the first hole where the match was eventually settled.

Lascuña sent his tee shot on the fairway while Que found the trees on the left.

The 43-year-old Que failed to clear the trees on his approach allowing Lascuña to win the match with a routine par.

Que had taken control of the match with back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11, but bogeyed 15 allowing Lascuña to draw level.

Lascuña made up for what he lacks in length with accuracy off the tee, hitting all fairways. His 12-year-old putter also did a lot of damage, producing six birdies.

On Thursday, he faces former Philippine Open champion Gerald Rosales who ousted Reymon Jaraula, 3 and 2.

Clashing in the same half of the draw are Clyde Mondilla and Fidel Concepcion who outplayed Jay Bayron, 2-up, and Anthony Fernando, 2 and 1, respectively.

Meanwhile, Lloyd Jefferson Go set up a mouth-watering duel with Miguel Tabuena after crushing Zanieboy Gialon, 7 and 5.

Tabuena, on the other hand, was extended to 21 holes by Rupert Zaragosa before prevailing.

“I will just stick to my game plan. Hitting the fairways is important at Villamor,” said Go who is priming up for the third stage of the Japan Tour Q-School.

The other match pits top seed Guido van der Valk against Keanu Jahns.

Van der Valk exacted revenge on Jerson Balasabas, winning 3 and 2.

Balasabas edged the Dutchman in sudden death to win the Philippine Masters in 2018 at Villamor.

Jahns, on the other hand, outlasted Johnnel Ababa, 1-up.

The quarterfinals and the semifinals will be played Thursday. The final is set Friday.
