Autotelic celebrates 10th anniversary with a special show

Filipino band Autotelic celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special performance dubbed Isang Dekadang Autotelic on 26 November at 123 Block, Mandala Park, Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.
Formed in 2012 as a “side project” since its members had their own respective bands, Autotelic found something worth pursuing — after a rigorous workshop of the sound it desired, a specific objective, and a common aesthetic.
The members’ initial jams became a problem-solving exercise: “How do we stand apart?” they asked.
Josh Villena was virtual pop machine, but the rest worked on a sound that ultimately became Autotelic. They all loved OPM, but they also liked dance pop, electronic music, and Japanese ephemera.
This was evident in the band’s 2014 eponymous EP debut — a mix of danceable guitar pop and future-forward indie rock, with narratives on typical lovelorn fare.
Autotelic played bars like they were arenas, appearing on TV the way they looked in a bar.
“Dahilan,” “Laro,” “Languyin,” “Gising,” and “Takipsilim” became more than songs — not so much that they became anthems, but more like they seemed like choice pieces of furniture in a well-appointed home.
Critics and fans agreed Autotelic deserved the accolades it has earned from Jam 88.3, Jack Daniel’s, Vandals on the Wall, Myx Awards, and, most notably, the Awit Awards, for Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist (“Laro,” 2017).
Autotelic is composed of singer-guitarist Josh Villena, guitarist Neil Tin, bassist Timothy “Pabs” Vargas, synth player EJ Edralin, and drummer Gep Macadaeg.
Isang Dekadang Autotelic also features December Avenue, and Ang Bandang Shirley.
