Sports science can be big boost for Filipinos to be active
University of the Philippines College of Human Kinetics assistant professor Dr. Jonathan Tagas said getting the youth to do at least 60 minutes of medium to vigorous aerobics exercises like those applied in athletes, according to the World Health Organization, will help Filipinos get out of their sedentary lifestyle.
“Activities that leave a person breathing heavily is needed. This is crucial for strengthening the muscles and bones,” Tagas said in an episode of Daily Tribune’s Gising Na.
The Covid-19 pandemic forced a lot of people, including children, to coop up in their homes and turn to gadgets as alternative forms of entertainment.
Tagas recommended limiting the screen time for kids to two hours per day so that there are more time for physical activities.
He also said starting the kids with rigorous training will help them out in the long run despite not growing up to be athletes.
“A lot of Filipino children need to be active not just to be athletes but be physically active and mentally healthy while they’re still alive,” Tagas said.
