Blu Boys remain winless

- IVAN SUING

The national men’s softball team is in danger of missing out on the Super round following a 1-3 loss to Cuba in the XVII WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup at rosedale Park in Auckland on Monday.

The Cubans, who rank No. 9 in the world, started strong at the top of the third inning when Yesander rodriguez hit a home run on the deep center field to send him and Anibal Vaillant to the home plate for an early 2-0 lead.

Julius Diaz, however, scored on a passed ball at the bottom of the fifth inning to pump life into the Blu Boys and gave them their first run of the tournament, 1-2.

But the Cubans refused to buckle to pressure as rodriguez scored on another run via a run-batted-in single from Hector Castillo at the top of the sixth inning to secure the victory.

With the loss, the Filipinos are now at the bottom of Group A with a 0-3 win-loss record following back-to-back setbacks to world No. 1 Argentina and powerhouse United States.
