The first United Nations Special Rapporteur welcomed by the government for some time will meet Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla next week, Justice Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Mico Clavano said yesterday.

Remulla will meet Special Rapporteur Mama Fatima Singhateh, who is currently in the country regarding the sale and sexual exploitation of children.

“Yesterday, I invited UN Special Rapporteur to visit DoJ if and when her schedule permits. She agreed and we have just confirmed that she will be visiting DoJ on Wednesday, 7 December 2022 af ter lunch,” Clavano said in a message to reporters.

The DoJ official said, “the purpose of the meeting is for Secretary Remulla to express his gratitude to the UN representative for visiting the Philippines and to answer any questions she may still have after her visit to the different local governments around the country.”

Rational domestic view

“Remulla wishes to give Singhateh a more macro perspective of the Online

Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children situation. He likewise wishes to describe the role of the National Government in quelling such criminal behaviour,” Clavano added.

Also, “we are looking forward to the UN Special Rapporteur’s visit to DoJ. Even more, we believe that this visit will provide more momentum in our war against OSAEC.”

Earlier, Remulla said the Philippines has invited a third special rapporteur as part of capacity building on human rights under the United Nations Joint Program, adding the move shows the government is open to suggestions.

During the visits of the UN experts, they will assess the situation and the progress made in combating and preventing the sale and sexual exploitation of children and problems regarding freedom of the press in the light of international human rights norms and standards.

The purpose of the meeting is for Secretary Remulla to express his gratitude to the UN representative for visiting the Philippines.

“We also invited a third one on extrajudicial killings because we want to increase and do capacity building for our forensic pathologists in the country,” Remulla said.

Morris Tidball-Binz, a medical doctor from Chile who specializes in forensic science, human rights and humanitarian action, is currently the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary killings.
