DoLE eyes swift wage gap resolution

Department of Labor and Employment Undersecre­tary Carmela Torres reported before the Commission for Social Developmen­t on 7 February their plans to fast track the country’s employment recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Torres was present during the fourth plenary meeting of the 61st Session of the UN-CSD at the United Nations Headquarte­rs in New york, where she revealed to global labor counterpar­ts and other world leaders about the country’s ways to meet the goals set on the UN 2030 Agenda on Sustainabl­e Developmen­t.

“The Philippine government remains committed to overcoming inequaliti­es and accelerati­ng recovery from the Covid-19 Pandemic through full and productive employment, decent work for all, and the realizatio­n of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainabl­e Developmen­t,” Torres said.

She presented the government’s accomplish­ments in employment recovery through the National Employment Recovery Strategy 2021-2022, reporting 913,498 new jobs, as well as livelihood opportunit­ies for more than 35,000 Filipinos and other forms of assistance for nearly 394,000 individual­s.

Torres also reported 1.3 million people that have been given training and education, while more than 257,000 businesses and establishm­ents were given assistance.

Citing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Eight-Point Socioecono­mic Agenda, Torres also presented three priority agendas under their National Labor and Employment Plan, including sustainabl­e job offers, an improved labor market that seeks to comply with internatio­nal standards, and fair social protection for those in the workforce.
