FOOD FOR THE GODS

- BY VANGIE BAGA-REYES

Let this bite-size goodness simply melt and fill your mouth with the rich and intense taste of pitted dates and chopped walnuts. One bite of this moist, chewy and buttery confection is enough to tickle your sugar appetite.

Though these bars look heavy and cloying, Czarina Ablaza-Syquia makes sure they have the right amount of sweetness — thanks to the generous load of walnuts that adds a nice, sharp, nutty and slightly bitter taste to the dessert.

“My first home-baked goodies are Food for the Gods,” says Ablaza-Syquia. “It’s my favorite since I was young. I remember my mom baking fruitcakes when I was little but I prefer Food for the Gods over fruitcakes especially during the holiday season.”

Because Food for the Gods became her favorite and go-to dessert, she decided to sell them first from her kitchen.

“I started off by giving Food for the Gods as gifts during Christmas. Then my friends and family started telling me to sell it. Through word of mouth, my Food for the Gods became popular.”

Aside from her homemade decadent bars, Ablaza-Syquia is also known for her moist and fudgy crinkles. “My FOOD for crinkles the Gods. were born during the pandemic,” she discloses. “My favorite chocolate crinkles were the ones from ADB. But since they closed during the pandemic, I started making my own choco crinkles.”

She adds: “From choco crinkles, I decided to make the other flavors — Chocnut crinkles, lemon crinkles, ube crinkles, strawberry crinkles, pandan crinkles, matchacrinkles, matchawhite, red velvet, red velvet white and

blueberry crinkles. I have 11 crinkle flavors so far.”

Ablaza-Syquia’s delicious line of desserts are packaged elegantly in sleek gift boxes in various dainty colors with satin ribbons.
