Broadway play ‘Steel Magnolias’ to be mounted in Cebu
The 1989 award-winning film version starred Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and then Hollywood newbie Julia Roberts
Steel Magnolias, the award-winning Broadway play by Robert Harling, is coming to Cebu.
The play is a comedy-drama about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana.
The title suggests that the “female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel”.
The 1989 award-winning film version starred Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and then Hollywood newbie Julia Roberts.
The Cebu staging of the play will feature Charlene Virlouvet, Liana San Diego, Clariza Mae Sevilla, Dahlia Alegre-Borres, Yvette Yntig and Marlinda Angbetic Tan.
It will be directed by Allan Nazareno and Vincent Paul D. Gaton.
Virlouvet plays Truvy Jones, the 40-year old beauty parlor owner who shares the latest rumors with anyone who’s willing to listen.
San Diego is the shy Annelle Dupuy-Despoto, who wears her young and troubled heart on her sleeve.
Ang plays Claire Belcher, the cheerful, 66-ish widow of the former Mayor, a funny, fiery, witty gossip hound.
Sevilla is Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, a young bride with type 1 diabetes who’s dealing with family stresses alongside complications. She wants to have children, but has to face the many possible struggles of a diabetic pregnancy.
Borres plays Ouiser (pronounced “Weezer”) Boudreaux, a wealthy old woman whose sense of humor can shred others to bits.
Lastly, Yntig is the overprotective mother hen M’Lynn Eatenton, whose time is preoccupied between being the administrator of the Mental Guidance Center and worrying about her daughter’s health.
Steel Magnolias runs 1 to 2 April 2023 at the CENEWOF Theater, Marcelo Fernan Press Center, Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City.
