SUGARLEAF ORGANIC MARKET and Café, a place that offers healthy and delicious food celebrates its third year in February 2014. It also has a mini-mart where people can purchase affordable, organic produce and meats. To boot, Sugarleaf carries a wide variety of natural sweeteners which are used for their array of healthy, diabetic-friendly desserts.

EVERYDAY MOM CUPCAKE SHOP opened last April 2012, with an unexpectedly good public reception. Owner Pamela Lim shares, “I had mothers telling me that their kids are allergic to food color or butter. The focus on healthy baking came when I became a mother and prepared food for my kids. Everyday Mom, the name, started out as my blog site about parenting and food.”

SONGCO: People can expect Sugarleaf to provide a wide array of organic, natural, and affordably priced products, mostly sourced out locally with a sprinkling of imported items to balance it out. We make our own kefir using raw milk. We showcase probiotics in our health yummy menu—specifically our wraps and smoothies and ice cream. Superfoods such as acai, chia, kefir, malunggay, spirulina are also used to power up our menu items.

Lim: All our products are butter-free and baked in stainless steel pans. We have been using heart-healthy rice bran oil, which is a kind of non-hydrogenated oil. We don't use artificial colors or flavors and only use unbleached flour, sea salt and aluminum-free leaveners.

Songco: Rman Lorenzo is on top of business expansion and IT and resource person for juicing and smoothies. His wife Jeren is a food technologist and enzyme therapist who concocts our best-selling kefir preparations. I’m in-charge of marketing, business development and public relations and very appreciative of our friends in the media in spreading Sugarleaf's mission of making the Philippines healthier one person at a time. Linda Narciso Songco, my mom is our president. She shares her wisdom in our operations and philosophy.

Lim: I have been baking since I was a kid but I learned Professional Baking at the Center for Culinary Arts Manila. However, the focus on healthy alternatives came when I became a mother. I learned that if you want something healthy and good, I had to make them myself. I read about good fats and bad fats, and the dangers of aluminum bake ware and artificial ingredients. I started making recipes healthier that became tastier too. I have made a mural in my shop about Everyday Mom's commitment to baking using natural ingredients and stainless steel bake ware.

Songco: The fruit and nut cookies have an interesting story. It is a modified recipe I've been using since I was a kid. However to make it healthier, I've replaced most of the ingredients with more wholesome things—vegan butter, raw nuts and dried fruit, coconut sugar. We source out ingredients from reputable suppliers who share in our mission in providing healthier products. It shouldn't be rocket science to make or bake healthy foods and desserts. It's all a matter of using better ingredients. Refined white sugar has been replaced with low-glycemic coconut sugar which is high in nutrients.

Lim: My Café Mocha cake was inspired by my favorite coffee drink. I wanted something chocolate that's moist and not heavy, with a hint of coffee and a delectable frosting that is not super sugary. Our cake sizes are dictated by the availability of stainless steel pans that we can source. I get all my ingredients and tools abroad, but I source some of my nuts and coco sugar locally. Meanwhile, we only use fresh bananas and carrots for our Banana Bread and Carrot Cakes, respectively. Since we don't use anything artificial, we use Coco Sugar.

Songco: More health-yummy foods and desserts from Sugarleaf Organic Market and Cafe! In 2014, we will be continuing with workshops and seminars about healthy and organic lifestyle, and how to integrate this in our daily lives.

Lim: We are excited to present more healthy products, using more Coco Sugar in our products and a wonderful surprise dairy-free treat that is totally vegetarian.
