While the Schnauzer may be one of the most aristocratic dogs in terms of appearance, grooming them takes a bit of work. Breeder Eric Decano tells us that keeping a Schnauzer’s jacket show-quality involves plenty of plucking by hand. “It should be a wiry coat. But once you taper a wiry coat, it could soften.”
Hidden potential: In contrast to its highmaintenance fur, the Schnauzer doesn’t shed, which makes them great company for any occasion. Decano says “because they’re nonshedding, they can go on your bed or on your couch,” he says.
Fun fact: That rugged facial hair and bushy set of eyebrows isn’t just for show. Its origins can be traced back to the Schnauzer’s days as vermin hunters.
