The politics of Speakership
he newspaper of the millennium, the Daily Tribune, was born amid the turbulence of the Y2K yellow movement against former President Joseph Estrada, taking the role of a newspaper that provides the public with a clear perspective on the political turn of events at that time. The next year, the People Power revolt or Edsa 2 that led to Estrada’s ouster happened, steeling the newspaper in its role as a watchdog of truth in a new dispensation. It was then that the Daily Tribune was regarded as a political paper, which stood out against competitors as a result of its incisive stories. Not only did it manage to survive; it is now competing against the best in the industry. Recently, it achieved swift success in its niche targeting by catering not only to habitual newspaper readers, but the huge tribe of young Filipinos who hunger for information. By fusing the latest technological advances, mainly the power of social media that has become the preoccupation of the youth and the traditional printed news, Daily Tribune is slowly carving itself as an ideal newspaper for the new age. Already considered as a hard-hitting political newspaper, with its motto “Without Fear, Without Favor,” Daily Tribune is winning a strong following for its daring to meet the challenges of the times. The newspaper industry had long realized that, for print media to survive, it should leap beyond the confines of the traditional newsprint and adapt to the common sources of information of young Filipinos, which are mobile phones and social media applications.
Failure to embrace the technological revolution that moves at the speed of light would result to its eventual extinction. Daily Tribune thus had combined forces with Concept and Information Group Inc. a fully digital news outfit TribuneNOW, which has a strong online presence and a bevy of programs.
Even with its limited resources,
Daily Tribune has become one of the fastest-growing broadsheets as a result of the ingenuity of injecting the endless possibilities provided by the Internet to push recall and recognition for the newspaper. The year 2020 bodes well as the newspaper hits its 20th year as the reader’s source of balanced news across all social stature. Pro-Filipino millennium paper
