Family vacations used to be complicated logistical affairs. There was the matter of getting everyone’s schedule to coincide, of course. And then there were the D-Day levels of planning: modes of transportation and the most efficient road routes and departure times in order to avoid the worst of the highway traffic. And more often than not, in spite of the best laid plans, families would discover that thousands of other families made the exact same plans. Cue the 12-hour journeys to North or South, with kids whining endlessly in the backseat: “Are we there yet?”

The recent rise in the popularity of Staycations in Metro Manila hotels has resulted in two things: one, much less stress—financial and emotional—for the hardworking parents who just want a relaxing break from their weekday grind. Second, there’s a boom in the percentages of hotels’ occupancy rates, especially during long weekends. It’s a winwin situation. After all, what do we Filipinos like doing best during vacations? Eat. Sleep. Swim. Rinse. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. And all that can be done, with a minimum of fuss and travelrelated problems, in most of the premium hotels. Lie in a soft king-size bed, under pure white high-thread count sheets, with the A/C on full blast 24/7 and unlimited Wi-Fi access at blazing speeds? Oh yeah. And great meals at some of the best restaurants around, just an elevator ride away. What’s not to love?

This month, we showcase three of our favorite Staycation Destinations, those that we love not just for the pools, the spas, the access to nearby or next-door malls, but most of all, the food they serve. The beautiful breakfasts at the Marco Polo in Ortigas. The lovely lunches at the Holiday Inn in Makati. And the dramatic dinners at the New World in Manila. Be our guest this weekend, please…
