LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Passion with purpose. Some people have a clear vision of what they want to do or be when they grow up, early on in their lives. Some discover their passion when they eventually experience more things in life. Purpose, however, is something we discover in a much later stage of our lives. This issue is not only about our passions in life and the journey to its discovery, but also about how we live a purposeful life through it.

What’s the difference between passion and purpose? According to Oprah, “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” It is very much individualistic in a way because it’s about what you want. Passion is about discovering what you love doing and pursuing it. It is emotionally driven. While purpose is about why you do it, which is often forgotten by many. Purpose is the reason why you do your passions. Purpose is also about others, how you make a difference by making an impact on their lives.

I think that passion without purpose is incomplete. This month, we want to feature the lives of people who are full of passion and purpose. Purpose that goes beyond themselves, concentrating on how the things they do affect the lives of others.

In this September issue of Lifestyle Asia, we let you in on the inspiring lives of people and how they have discovered or rediscovered their passions in life including what they did to achieve success from it. Certainly, there are a lot of lessons and learnings in their stories of passion and purpose. Passion for the arts, fashion, creatives, food, and beauty are the different categories that we picked to focus on. But what is passion in these aspects without really having a clear purpose? Purpose makes our lives meaningful. Being great in the things we are passionate about is not enough.

Roxanne Farillas, our LA Voice for this month so expressed, “Passion is giving your body and soul to whatever you pursue.” Plains & Prints recently celebrated their 25th anniversary, being on top of their game in the fashion industry despite the presence of fast fashion international brands. Hers is a story that tells us that there is so much to learn and be inspired about from loving what you do.

In our society, “Follow your passion!” is more commonly heard rather than “Find your purpose!” For us, we want to focus on both. We want to feature people who are truly inspiring and have found their true passion and purpose in their different industries. Amina Aranaz, Mark Bumgarner, Ana Lorenzana,

Jhett Tolentino, and Vince Uy all have one thing in common, they love what they do and have been excelling in their different industries, setting trends, innovating, making a mark, and impacting the lives of others. Read their stories and discover their deeper purpose on how they have become great in their passions.

It is our first time to put a couple in the cover this year. Rightfully so, with Doc Z and Doc Aivee Teo as they celebrate ten stellar years in the industry of dermatology and aesthetics, pursuing excellence and world-class innovation. This couple has been unstoppable in pursuing their true passion and purpose. They have revolutionized the industry and have taken on the cusp of excellence. They are motivated by a deeper drive and purpose for their clients, which has become their main ingredient for success. The authenticity in their purpose has transcended for their client’s love and loyalty for them. This couple is truly a force to be reckoned with. Happy 10th Anniversary to the Aivee clinic!

To close, I think Ralph Waldo Emerson was able to summarize “Passion with Purpose” in this statement, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
