EBU CITY — Defending national champion La Salle and University of San Carlos boosted their finals bids after posting contrasting victories Friday night in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Elite Eight at the Cebu City Coliseum here.
The Green Archers took control of the game in the second half to beat the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 74-64, while the Warriors avenged their CESAFI title loss to the Southwestern University Cobras, 74-68.
Both teams are now 2-0 in the single-round eliminations of the tourney that determines the national collegiate champion.
The top two teams from either Group A or Group B will advance to the best- of-three championship series, while the third and fourth best teams meet in a one-game duel for third place.
USC can move a win shy of clinch- ing a finals berth if it beats NCAA champion San Beda last night. The Warriors and the Red Lions were playing at presstime.
UAAP champion National University opened its quest for a rare collegiate double against UV yesterday.
The Bulldogs will also face Southwestern today, after the NCAA runner-up Arellano University Chiefs tackle UV in the opener.
Southwestern has a 0-2 record and will need to win its remaining two games to keep its slim hopes alive.
