Algieri all pumped up

- By NICK GIONGCO

Chris Algieri didn’t waste precious time that as soon as he landed in Macau early Friday afternoon even after a grueling flight from the US mainland, he asked a member of his team to get ready to help him do some work in the gym.

That’s how seriously Algieri is taking his crack at superstardom against Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 23 at the Cotai Arena, a 15,000-capacity venue within the sprawling complex of The Venetian Macao.

While everything’s going to be in moderation starting now until fight week, Algieri is making sure he makes the most out of the available time to whip himself into form as he will be up against the most accomplished fighter of this era.

Algieri, in a column that he wrote for the New York Post that came out yesterday, feels he has Pacquiao all figured out.

“If I go out there and I’m able to set the pace and be the ring general and control the fight, the fight is mine,” said Algieri, 30, who has never been in a fight of this magnitude.

“I see myself performing and doing exactly what we’ve been doing in the gym and being consistent. I see that when I do my visualization exercises. I see that when I’m taking ice baths. I see that before I go to bed. I see that as soon as I wake up…I see that every time I close my eyes.”

Algieri is guaranteed $1.5 million, the biggest of his career, and he intends to earn more with an upset win over Pacquiao, who is on the twilight of a legendary career.

But despite Pacquiao’s descent, Algieri remains the huge underdog since he hasn’t been with the marquee names except that his biggest win was against Pacquiao’s Russian sparmate Ruslan Provodnikov.
