Chairman’s Charity Cup up at S’woods

-

The Chairman’s Charity Cup, Manila Southwoods’ signature tournament, unwraps this Friday and Saturday with a full field of 360 gearing up for a battle royale in various divisions, including the overall championship and low gross honors, at the Legends and Masters courses.

Tony Valera, whose 68 netted him the overall crown last year, and low gross champion Thirdy Escaño, fresh from steering Team Southwoods to the Fil-Am Invitational golf championship last weekend, are expected to defend their respective crowns in the 18-hole tournament held in honor of the club’s chairman Bob Sobrepeña and backed by title sponsor Whealth Inc. (Mega Fiber).

The shotgun start tee-off is set at 7:30 a.m. at the Legends and 8 a.m. at the Masters on each day of the event backed by Mitsubishi Motors Phils. Corp./Diamond Motors Corp., Royal Caribbean/Baron Travel, Mit Air Sales Center, Netforce International, Inc., Agrexplore Corp., Turf Company and Warbird Security and Investigation Agency as Platinum presentors.

A brand new Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS from Mitsubishi Motors and an Alaska cruise for two, including airfare, courtesy of Royal Caribbean International and Baron Travel will be staked as hole-in-prizes in the tournament supported by San Miguel Purefoods, Rudy Project, Resorts World Manila and Sweet Spot Sports and Golf Equipment, Inc. as Gold sponsors and Edward Marcs Phils., Inc. as the lone Silver sponsor.

Cart Plaza Manufacturing is also putting a Yamaha Golf cart while Emperador Distillers, Inc. offers an allexpense paid trip to Spain for two for aces.

The Mitsubishi Mirage car and the Alaska cruise, however, will be raffled off if no one scores a hole-in-one, according to Southwoods general manager Mark Watson.

After the cancellation of their muchawaited game last Monday due to tropical storm Ruby, Hapee Toothpaste and CaféFrance try to resume their winning drive when they clash against separate rivals in the PBA D-League Aspirants at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Led by Bobby Parks and Garvo Lanete, Hapee collides with Wangs Basketball at 12 noon with the former out to post its sixth straight win to break its standoff with idle Cagayan Valley.

Both Hapee and Cagayan are tied for the lead with similar 5-0 records.

The Bakers, on the other hand, will be seeking their fifth win in six games against the dangerous MJM Builders at 2 p.m.

Wangs have an inferior 2-3 record, but Hapee Coach Ronnie Magsanoc is not taking them lightly.

“Whoever we play, we need to go all out. Dito sa D-League walang madaling kalaban, one bad game and you will pay for it,” he said.

CaféFrance Coach Egay Macaraya knows that MJM is capable of beating anybody in the league that’s why he challenged his wards to play smart and tough from start to finish.

Though MJM is composed of star players from Far Eastern University and National University, the team has yet to jell as evident of its disappointing 1-4 mark.

“We just need to win the games na kailangan na ipanalo. MJM is a dangerous squad. We just have to stick with our game plan,” said Macaraya. “Malakas yang team na yan. Di talaga kami pwede magrelax,’ he added.

The 10 a.m. opening game is the battle between Tanduay Light (2-4) and MP Hotel (1-5).
