ABS-CBN goes digital, expands audience reach through TVplus

- By ANNIE S. ALEJO

ABS- CBN yesterday launched its latest innovation in television broadcasting through ABS- CBN TVplus, a digital box more popularly known as the “mahiwagang black box.” ABS-CBN TVplus is the network’s foray into digital broadcasting and a promise of a transformed viewing experience for Filipinos.

The ceremonial switch- on was held yesterday along ABS- CBN Center Road, graced by the networks top executives ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III, ABS- CBN president and CEO Charo SantosConcio, and ABS-CBN access head Carlo Katigbak.

“We’re the first net- work to broadcast in digital and I think we are the first one to go commercial,” Katigbak told the Manila Bulletin.

The “mahiwagang black box” is sold at a one-time fee and with no monthly or installation fee.

“The ABS- CBN TVplus is really built for... non-cable households that are not able to afford to pay monthly subscription fees,” Katigbak says of their target demographic.

It comes with a list of benefits to adapters, foremost of which is dramatically improved picture quality and sound. “With clearer signal, it would entice people to watch the channel more,” says Katigbak.

“That’s the primary reason we decided to go digital. For people who cannot get a clear ABS- CBN signal (even in Metro Manila), we hope when they upgrade to the box, it will give them a better experience of watching ABS-CBN.”
