Tonight, a new batch of Binibining Pilipinas beauty queens will be crowned at the storied Araneta Coliseum and there’s no denying the heightened anticipation.
Who will make history? At night’s end, we will crown a new Miss Universe Philippines; and the titles Bb. Pilipinas International, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational, Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental, and Bb. Pilipinas Tourism will be bestowed on a few others.
All eyes are now on the 34 lovely candidates as they march excitedly toward the end of their journey.
Immersed in a whirlwind of activities that started from their introduction to the media last Feb. 17, the ladies were one in saying they’re as excited as everyone to finally see the fruit of their labor. Still, everyone is feeling the pressure.
Candidate No. 34, Teresita Ssen Marquez, more popularly known as Winwyn, told Bulletin Entertain
ment, “I’d be lying if I said otherwise. Of course, there’s pressure. But I won’t let it affect my performance. I will use it as motivation to do my best.”
Even Candidate No. 10, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who is competing in the pageant for the third time, is feeling the jitters. “Well, mainly because this is going to be my last stint,” she said.
Wurtzbach feels she has a bit of advantage over the other contestants though. “After being in the same situation several times already, I would say there’s a certain familiarity and it helps,” she explained. “The first time I competed, I was too calculating; I was too careful. Now, I know that going out there and simply having fun is the best approach.”
Sharing Wurtzbach’s sentiments is Candidate No. 28, Hannah Ruth Lulu Sison, who is also competing for the third time.
She said, “Yeah, I still get nervous but I try to control it. After all these years, I realized the competition is more mental than physical. It’s not just about looking good. You have to be mentally prepared. But how could you if you’re nervous, right? So I just try to enjoy every aspect of it.”
Their attitude is what continues to inspire Candidate No. 20, Tanya Angelina Nicole Hyde and Candidate No. 32, Danita Joan Ruazol, who, like Marquez, are both first-timers.
“Just like what they said, I just try to enjoy every aspect of it,” said Ruazol. “I admit, it’s quite overwhelming at first, but I’m thankful that my co-candidates are quite helpful and supportive. Everybody’s unique and I learn a lot from them.”
Hyde added, “I really didn’t know what to expect (at first). But I’m glad that all the other contestants are very supportive. We all get along well. I learn a lot from them as much as they learn from me,” she said.
“But I try not think too much about coronation night ’cause I easily freak out,” she added with a laugh. “The pressure is slowly coming on and it doesn’t help that I’m all alone. My family is based in Qatar. But they promised to watch at coronation night so, I intend to make them proud and do my best.”
Marquez, like Hyde also waxed sentimental about her parents, Joey Marquez and Alma Moreno, watching the coronation night.
“It’s going to be the first time if ever that they’d be together and it’s a big deal that they’re doing it for me,” she said.
“Actually, it will be like a family reunion of sorts. My aunts from Australia, my brothers and sisters from the States, they’re all coming in. Ngayon lang makukumpleto ang pamilya ko. Excited ako sa pageant
night kasi makikita ko sila magkakasama, side ng mom, side ng dad ko. I’m thinking, ibang klase siguro
talaga ang gabing ito kasi kumpleto
sila. I don’t want to disappoint my parents so I’ll do my best.”
At the back of each candidate’s mind is the possibility of losing, but they do have Plan B in the back burner.
Wurtzbach intends to explore show business. “I also want to try writing if not improve on my culinary skills. For sure, I’ll be very busy,” she said. Sison, on her part, said, “I’ll probably go back to teaching. I used to teach at De La Salle – College of St. Benilde.”
Marquez shared, “I asked to be released from my GMA contract before I joined the contest so, I don’t know. If ever given the chance, I would want to return to show business. If not, I’ll continue pursuing my masters in education.” The Binibining Pilipinas 2015 coronation night will be telecast live tonight on ABS- CBN at 9:30 with a replay airing on the Lifestyle Network on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
