PNG citizen tries to smuggle out baby in a backpack
A citizen of Papua New Guinea tried to smuggle her two-month old son out of the country Monday night by placing the baby inside a backpack before going through immigration at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
However, airport authorities detected the baby after the bag passed through the x- ray scanner, according to the report of NAIA security official Vicente Guerzon.
The mother, a 25-year- old nursing graduate, was identified as Jenifer Pavolaurea. She was scheduled to depart for Port Moresby at 11 p.m.
Initially, Pavolaurea was questioned by immigration officer Richielle Cris Claveria for overstaying in the country for almost six months. But after paying the fines, she was allowed to proceed to the departure area where the baby was discovered.
During interrogation, airport police confirmed that the boy was indeed Pavol- aurea’s son. She told authorities that she did not have the necessary immigration clearance to bring her son home.
