Tips on How to Take Care of Antiques

- By MARITA V. PE BENITO

An antique is an old collectable itemthat is usually of high value because of age, beauty, rarity, and condition. Most antiques are heirlooms, family collectibles that are passed on from generation to generation. These items, whether they are made of wood, silver, glass, ceramics, etc., are usually family treasures that hold traditions and memories. These are all valuable that is why proper care should be of importance.

1) Do not place furniture in front of a window, near airconditioners or heaters, and stoves. Ultraviolet light can damage antique furnitures. Sunlight can cause fading and degradation to wood and fabrics. Heat can cause shrinking and can loosen the glue joints.

2) Use the right cleaning and polishing materials. Avoid using oil. Oilis very bad for wood. It soaks into open grain and can turn wood black. Use wax instead. Wax creates a protective surface on the piece.

3) Keep an eye for insects and pets. Wood, leather and fabrics are very inviting to insects. Beetles and termites eat their way along the grain inside until they mature. Mature termites bore their way out, leaving holes. If it is a problem, call an exterminator. 4) Handling and Moving First check loose and damaged joints. Carry chairs by the seat rails and not by the top rails or arms. As for tables, carry from its pegs instead of the top. Large pieces should be lifted and not dragged. Remove shelves, drawers, doors when transporting. Put it in a blanket or a thick padding to protect the furniture. 5) Blot up spills immediately with kitchen paper towels. 6)Sometimes wooden drawers or cabinets have stubborn odors from tobacco or mildew. To remove odor, sprinkle a mixture of coffee grounds and grains of rice. Let this mixture sit for a week. You can always repeat the process until all odors are gone. For much stubborn smell, use lemon oil.
