Floyd working for perfection

- By NICK GIONGCO

Mr. Perfect. That’s what Floyd Mayweather is known within his inner circle. Kelly Swanson, long-time publicist of the unbeaten US fighter, says his boss “is training extremely hard for this fight” with Manny Pacquiao May 2 in Las Vegas.

“Floyd is a perfectionist and has many people to help at any given time so everything gets done smoothly and without interruption,” noted Swanson.

While the Pacquiao fight looms as the biggest ever for the 38-year- old Michigan native, “he takes his training for every fight very seriously,” according to Swanson.

Armed with an immaculate 47-0 record, Mayweather gets help during training from his chief trainer and father Floyd Sr.

Also lending a hand during training are his uncle and assistant trainer Roger Mayweather, another assistant and 1996 Atlanta Olympics teammate Nate Jones, camp coordinator and distant cousin DeJuan Blake, handwraps expert Bob Ware, conditioning coach Alex Ariza and Rafael Garcia, an 85-year-old cutman who was recalled especially for this fight.

Mayweather trains almost every day and “he has various training times some late at night,” said Swanson, who earned Mayweather’s trust and respect when the fighter was in jail for two months in Las Vegas for domestic abuse.

While Mayweather was serving time, Swanson wrote Mayweather letters.

“I like the way Kelly Swanson, she wrote me letters every day,” Mayweather said in interview with noted fight scribe Robert Morales.

“Thank you. You’re the best publicist in the world…I’m not just saying that. I don’t know about anybody else’s publicist that wrote them every day when they were locked up.”

“It was the least I could do while he was going through it,” said the US East Coast-based Swanson in a text message that was used in the article that appeared on secondsout.com.
