Manila eyes sale of Rizal sports complex

- By JENNY F. MANONGDO

The Manila city government is eyeing and studying the possible sale of the decades-old Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) in Malate following the earlier announcement of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) that it is planning to transfer to a new location.

Although there are no concrete plans at present, city engineer Roberto Bernardo said several businessmen and business groups have already expressed interest in the prized and premiere property.

The more than nine-hectare sports complex is owned by the city government while the PSC holds office and hosts various sports venues and facilities under an agreement with the city government.

“The city is just reacting to the statements made by the PSC saying they want to transfer to another location because the environment is no longer good for sports because of pollution and the structure is no longer in good condition.” Bernardo said.

“From the very start, the mayor has always invited development but how can we have development if the title is with Manila city but the PSC is using it. If the city can pay the PSC for the new site, the property will remain with the city and then, we can start developing it,” Bernardo added.

“We have already been told that there it has no historical significance except for the small statue that is inside it,” he said.
