Slaughter returns
After missing the team’s first five games with a right sprained ankle, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel center Greg Slaughter is set to return today when the Kings face San Miguel Beer in the seasonending PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“I’m just excited. The last game I played was last conference. I put all the work, necessary things to get ready,” said Slaughter after Ginebra’s practice session at the CCF gym in Ortigas, Pasig City.
The 7-foot-Slaughter injured his ankle when he accidentally stepped on the foot of Dorian Pena during practice.
The last time Slaughter played was Mar. 28 when Ginebra lost to Rain or Shine during their quarterfinal showdown, which the Elasto Painters won, 92-91, to oust the popular team in the Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.
Slaughter went through a rigorous training to get his form back, but expects some difficulties with his conditioning since new Ginebra coach Frankie Lim has put emphasis on a run-and-gun style of play.
Aside from that, Slaughter will also be up against an old rival in 6-foot-10 SMB center June Mar Fajardo, whose team is on a four-game winning streak to move up to fifth spot with a 4-2 card.
“I feel stronger now, although my conditioning is not yet there. I’ve been out for more than three weeks… I’m getting there. I think I can get my rhythm back,” said Slaughter.
