BBL and Politics

- By HECTOR R. R. VILLANUEVA “All those men have their price.” — Robert Walpole

PHILIPPINE politics is approaching the nadir of indecency, corruptibility, viciousness, amorality, and greed that has never been seen in previous administrations.

The Aquino administration has become notorious for its excesses, its penchant for lies and deception, and regime of crime and violence.

To start with, the relentless and merciless persecution and harassment of Vice President Jejomar Binay and his family have become overkill and will continue until the Vice President ceases to become a viable and winnable candidate in 2016, or so they think.

Thus, paving the way for a walk in the park for the Liberal Party choice, Sec. Mar Roxas, and winsome Sen. Grace Poe.

It is all politics, and it is getting dirtier, corrupt, and insidious.

However, the destruction and demolition of Vice President Binay and his possible incarceration before the start of the campaign period is only the tip of the iceberg.

Simultaneously, veteran politicians and professional fundraisers are being positioned in strategic and key agencies, such as the Bureau of Customs, BIR, DOTC, PCSO, DPWH, and DBM in readiness for 2016.

It is obvious, non-negotiable, and vitally important for the administration to win by a credible landslide if Pres. Noynoy Aquino is to be spared from the gallows, so to speak, as impeachment and lawsuits are being prepared.

In this respect, Vice President Jejomar Binay is the only person standing in the way of a Liberal Party electoral victory.

On the other hand, endemic corruption and politics are both impinging on the controversial Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) which will not pass Congress unless generous economic incentives are dangled to facilitate passage, that is, pay as you vote.

While the Palace instinctively denies the probability, the fact is that Pres. Benigno Noynoy Simeon Aquino is neither a charismatic leader nor a charming and endearing person to be able to persuade with his personality the congressmen and senators to follow him without the incentives.

If he wants Congress to approve the BBL, he has to bribe the congressmen and some senators, as he did in the Corona Impeachment with his “Presidential Development Assistance Fund which DBM Sec. Butch Abad will gladly expedite with alacrity and without hesitation.

Without the incentives, the BBL is dead in the water.

Indeed, while the cruel, endless persecution and political harassment of VP Binay continues and aggravated by the probable use of pork barrel bribe money to speed up the passage of the BBL, Philippine politics is entering a terrifying and perilous phase that the Filipino people and future generation may live to regret.

For Pres. Aquino, this is not a good legacy to have.

You be the judge.
