Industrious, honest Filipinos make waves in Italian region

- By ROY C. MABASA

The Prefects of Cagliari and Sassari in Italy's Autonomous Region of Sardinia only have words of praise for the close to 2,000 Filipinos living and working in the region.

In recent meetings with Philippine Ambassador to Italy Domingo P. Nolasco, Prefect Alessio Giuffrida of Cagliari and Prefect Salvatore Mulas of Sassari praised the Filipinos for their honesty, hard work, and for being well-integrated and law-abiding citizens.

Prefects are the Italian state representatives in the provinces with the responsibility to coordinate with the police in the enforcement of laws on public safety, which include, among others, rules which concern immigration.

In response, Ambassador Nolasco expressed his gratitude to the Prefects for the continued support of the national and regional governments to the Filipinos in Italy.

He also briefed the officials on the positive developments in the Philippines towards inclusive growth.

With the visit to Sardinia, the envoy explained the country’s efforts to further build on linkages with the rest of the world to promote more trade, more investments and more tourists into the Philippines.

In this context, the opportunities for commercial and people-to-people exchanges between the Philippines and Sardinia were discussed.

During his official visit to Sardinia, Ambassador Nolasco also met with ranking officials of locally-based company Gruppo ISA.

Considered as one of Sardinia’s biggest companies with operations in wholesale and retail trade, industrial production, services and agriculture, Gruppo ISA manages 500 affiliates in the region, including supermarkets, warehouse clubs and shopping centers in Sardinia to service the island-region’s 2 million population.
