PH entries capture 2 golds at world talent competitio­n

The Philippine­s bagged two gold medals for modeling and music at the World Championsh­ip of Performing Arts in Long Beach, California over the weekend.

Reigning Mr. Philippine­s Mike Mendoza was named Male Model of the World while Y-Fi was adjudged Vocal Group of the World, during the global talent contest widely referred to as the talent Olympics.

Hazel Joy M. Ortiz, meantime, took silver medal honors in the female category of the modeling contest.

The vocal group Y-Fi is composed of young Filipinos whose repertoire ranges from gospel to pop music.

In its Facebook account, members of the group thanked their families and friends for their support.

"Thank you Lord!! you are so great and wonderful! To our Families and friends thank you so much for all the support and love! Thank you so much! God bless us all!"

The Philippine­s also won second place in the national director's and national costume categories.

More than 30 Filipino entries joined in the annual contest for aspiring musicians, singers, actors, dancers and models with a total cash prize of US$380,000 in scholarshi­ps.

Now on its 19th year, WCOPA has produced numerous talents in the recording and movie industry around the world.

Jed Madela became the first Filipino to win the WCOPA world grand champion title. He went on to sign with Universal Records, appears in a weekly television show, performs in concerts here and abroad, and has had six double platinum albums.
