Airport’s multifarious problems

- By FLORO MERCENE

WE commiserate with airport GM Angel Honrado for his current health problems. The latest heart seizure is just one among other health issues he had in the past.

As a chopper pilot, he had to swim to safety after ditching in the sea off Cavite in 1978. In 2013, he suffered brain concussion when hit by a rock while negotiating the North Luzon Expressway.

There was a time when hooligans would simply drop a rock from the overpass hoping to hit passing cars, just for fun.

Honrado had such experience when the rock went through his windshield and struck him in the head.

Two weeks ago, GM Honrado had a heart seizure, one year after he had a triple heart bypass operation.

He explained that his seizure may have been a result of a previous trauma.

His neurologists says his past trauma may have resulted in scars in brain tissue that can trigger “delayed reactions,” says his spokesman.

Honrado says his heart is in a perfect condition and he is very strong.

Meanwhile, he was diagnosed with bleeding gastric ulcer last weekend.

Honrado says he is not feeling weak because of the seizure. He is confident that he can return to work at the airport soon.

It must have entailed a lot of sacrifice for Honrado to go on with his job at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which seems not to run out of something to be criticized about.

Now that the renovation is almost finished, here comes the International Air Transport Association (IATA), saying the NAIA safety issues needs to be addressed, such as possible runway incursions, congestion, and delays.

IATA said NAIA’s capacity and efficiency can also be improved, suggesting the use of Runway 31 by moving bigger aircraft parked there to another location.

Honrado cannot immediately attend to these problems while recuperating. He should make his health a priority.

However, it is probably difficult to part with the intelligence fund, among other perks, the airport boss is legally entitled to, and that’s free from audit.
