Hamburg Sud awarded ‘Best Green Shipping Line’
Hamburg Süd was recently awarded the “Best Green Shipping Line” for the fourth year in a row during the 2015 Asian Freight and Supply Chain (AFLAS) Awards sponsored by Asia Cargo News held in Hong Kong and attended by several hundred senior representatives of Asian and international companies in the shipping, transportation and logistics sectors.
The award was accepted on behalf of the shipping group by Eric Chow, general manager area for South China. “The AFLAS award is one of the leading freight and logistics awards in Asia. Thousands of shippers and industry experts have voted, making the results a true reflection of the opinion of the industry,” said Chow.
An expert panel selected three shipping companies as AFLAS finalists including Hamburg Süd and the winner was chosen by the readers of the Hong Kong-based transport and logistics newspaper, Asia Cargo News.
The criteria for the award included compliance with national and global environmental regulations and standards, adequate investment in new environmental technologies and measures to reduce fuel consumption.
Hamburg Süd has achieved its environmental target for 2020 to reduce the CO2e emissions of its fleet by 26 per cent compared to 2009 ahead of time thanks to a series of measures.
These include investments in the efficient ships, increasing the average ship capacity as part of its newbuilding program, a further reduction in the operating speed at sea and further optimisation of processes in the deployment of ships.
The CO2e reduction target redefined at the end of 2014 aims to reduce emissions per unit transported (TEU x km) by 45 per cent in the period from 2009 to 2020.
The carbon dioxide equivalents unit of measurement, CO2e, allows the effect of different greenhouse gases occurring in the combustion process other than carbon dioxide to be compared with regard to their impact on the climate.
In March, 2015, Hamburg Süd took over the liner services of Compaña Chilena de Navegación Interoceánica (CCNI) between the West coast of South America on the one hand and Asia, North America and Europe on the other.
The takeover has increased the shipping group’s transport volume by slightly less than 10 percent or around 300,000 TEU. In certain trade lanes, Hamburg Süd has achieved market leadership and is developing routes on which it has not previously operated.
In order to expand the liner network and leverage the resulting logistical advantages, Hamburg Süd started operating the East-West trade lanes from the turn of the year.
The collaboration with United Arab Shipping Corp. (UASC) at the beginning of 2015 has enabled Hamburg Süd to provide slot capacity at competitive rates. In return, UASC has obtained slots on selected South America routes operated by Hamburg Süd.
