The explanation of the parable of the sower
JESUS said to His disciples: “Hear then the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”
REFLECTION THE SEED SOWN ON RICH SOIL. Jesus likens the one who hears the word and understands it to a seed sown on rich soil. It yields abundant fruits. What an ideal combination: Perfect quality seed (the Word of God) and high quality soil (the Christian who is totally docile)!
Jesus wants high quality disciples who understand his teachings. These disciples exhibit excellent preparation and self-conditioning in order to profit much from the good news of Jesus. They pay attention to his message. They are single-hearted and focused. Jesus is one hundred percent sure that the performance of such disciples will be outstanding.
Jesus does not commend followers who show interest in Him but do not come back for more because they are preoccupied with making more money and becoming more popular. They are worldly and vainglorious. They are simply out of order in terms of spiritual values. These low quality disciples cannot produce much. But take note that the parable does not condemn them but calls them to reform their lives. They have shown initial interest in Jesus. They must continue getting to know him and heeding his message. Learn how to be a high quality disciple of Christ. Turn yourself into a good soil for the Word.
