What electorate loves to hate in BAYAW advocacy campaign

- By SAMUEL P. MEDENILLA

Voters will finally be able to meet a presidential candidate they would love to hate for the 2016 elections in NEW5’s latest BAYAW election advocacy campaign.

Coined from the word bayaw, the Filipino term for brother-in-law, the acronym stands for Bagong Alyansang Ayaw sa Walang Hiya (BAYAW) the fictional partylist launched by TV5 for its political satire during the 2013 elections.

In the latest installment of its political literacy campaign, Jun Sabayton, TV5’s comedian and newscaster, who serves as the representative of BAYAW, declared yesterday his intention to run against other presidential aspirants, which includes Vice President Jejomar Binay and Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.

“I already asked them to step down in favor of my candidacy. I warned them they might end up looking like high profile nuisance candidates against me,” Sabayton said in his acceptance speech.

The announcement, which had all the trimmings of a legitimate proclamation rally, including its own marching band and recorded endorsement videos from other politicians, was held at the historic Manila Hotel. Sabayton and his entourage also visited the Manila Bulletin office yesterday afternoon.

TV5 news head and anchor Luchi CruzValdez said Sabayton will represent the traditional politicians or trapo, who would spend large sum of money to virtually buy their way to public posts.

“This will serve as a warning to voters on the candidates they should not vote. It’s what you call negative reinforcement or reverse psychology,” Valdez said.
