Winning Condo Design Ideas Come to Life

- By JOYCE REYES-AGUILA

As any condo dweller would probably attest, living in a residential building brings both convenience and challenges. usual hurdle is space restriction, so it incumbent upon residents to be able to maximize their unit space and to make it functional for individual or family needs.

Young professionals and starting families alike are always looking for ideas for their home, don’t you agree? How do I make a space practical and presentable at the same time? What items do I need? What furniture pieces will best suit my lifestyle?

Questions like these led to the recent partnership between a home magazine and real estate developer Avida. Through a design competition, three upcoming designers were paired with experienced professionals to style different home sections of an Avida Vertis North (to rise on EDSA in Quezon City) model unit. Each team was given a budget of R100,000 and access to paint and appliances from contest sponsors.

The team of Kristine Neri-Magturo and mentee Gino Eraña emerged as winners. Their bedroom design for a young couple with an active lifestyle featured beach-weathered wood and surf-themed pieces. The originality and visual impact of the team’s space convinced the judges of the tilt. The judges were impressed with the team’s resourcefulness particularly when they created patterns and textures on the wall.

In the same model unit, the tandem of Hannah Acab Faustino and mentee Jane Karla Samson executed the kitchen and dining room concept inspired by the so-called Northern Lights. It leads to the living room design of John Vigilia and mentee Joevie Andrew Tuquib that aims to show how a space can be functional yet modern at the same time. For this space, the judges were truly impressed on how cohesive the space looked. It seemed as if it was designed by only one person; but in reality, 6 creative minds were responsible for the space.

At present, space is still the main concern of condo dwellers. It is advised that they should always maximize layout and have enough storage. The main goal is not to feel crammed in your space. Having multi-purpose pieces that can provide added storage is vital.

The model unit is open to the public until September 2015.
