Promoters hold key to Pacquiao, Khan fight

- By NICK GIONGCO

Whether a mouth-watering matchup with former sparring partner Manny Pacquiao will happen next year is a question that can be answered by the all-powerful promoters, British star Amir Khan said the other day.

“Hopefully, a Manny Pacquiao fight (is next),” Khan told Newsday, a leading New York paper. “A Pacquiao fight is something I would love to have. I think it can happen. That would be a huge fight.”

Pacquiao is being promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank, who is keen on staging a Pacquiao-Khan fight in the first quarter of 2016.

In fact, Arum, 83, was even in London a few weeks ago and met up with representatives of Khan, who relishes to face Pacquiao in an actual fight.

“Obviously, we both want to fight, right now it’s up to the promoters,” said Khan, who used to be trained by Freddie Roach before hooking up with Virgil Hunter after an ugly split with the Wild Card guru.

Khan has Al Haymon as his promoter, the same guy who handles the career of Floyd Mayweather.

While it appears difficult at first to get Arum and Haymon on board, one should look back at the way they all agreed when Mayweather-Pacquiao was being made.
