Manila Chinatown Lions Club offers scholarships to Ilonggos

- By TARA YAP

ILOILO CITY — The Manila Chinatown Lions Club is offering college scholarship grants to underprivileged, but smart students from Iloilo City.

Dr. Primitivo Chua, former district governor of the Manila Chinatown Lions Club, said he made the offer to Iloilo City Lions Club during the latter’s 65th Charter Anniversary celebration.

Chua, who serves as regent at the Universidad de Manila, said this is one way to have continuing partnership with its sister club in Iloilo.

“Tuition is 100 percent free,” said Chua, who was accompanied by fellow Manila Chinatown Lions Club members Dr. Ariel Baira and Crispin Go, a past president.

Iloilo City Lions Club President Prima Buckley-Sweeney said this is a welcome development as it gives educational opportunity for deserving Ilonggo students to study in the country’s capital city.

Last year, Chua led the medical mission of Manila Chinatown Lions Club for survivors of super-typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in the northern Iloilo municipality of Estancia.
