Mar Roxas, get Kris as your vice

- By FLORO MERCENE

SENATOR Grace Poe just stole the thunder from all of the presidential candidates when she announced last Wednesday that she is going after the 2016 presidency.

Frontrunner Jojo Binay and administration candidate Mar Roxas had to inject gallons of steroid into their campaign if they do not want to be left behind in her dust.

Aside from her notable performance in the Senate, Grace’s popularity is propelled no less by the easy name recall and the lingering popularity of her father, the late screen idol Fernando Poe Jr.

Now, the only way I see for Binay and Roxas to be able to get back at Poe is to choose a vice president with as much oomph, savviness, and name recall as American billionaire Donald Trump.

Binay seems to be at a disadvantage at this point in the game, having no clear VP to count on. But it is still early in the game.

Roxas, on the other hand, could choose between Batangas Governor Vilma Santos and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo.

But if Roxas and the administration really want to steal back the thunder from Poe, why not get actress and TV host Kris Aquino as his running-mate?

The similarity between Kris and Trump is uncanny, where it not for their gender.

Kris is as much an intelligent entertainer as Trump. They both possess acid tongues. Kris is outspoken and so is Trump. She is not called taklesa (tactless) for nothing. She is also one of the richest Filipinos around, going by the taxes she paid, and not counting that she is a Cojuangco heiress.

Trump has been in showbiz for years, and so is Kris.

No matter how she is perceived by the “AB” crowd, Kris is likeable, controversial, loved and adored, and thus very popular to legions of Filipinos in the “CD” category, in the same manner that Trump’s controversial statements and volubility, including his lack of tact, has endeared him to his fellow Americans.

Wait until Kris throws her hat into the ring, propelled by her presidential brother’s remaining popularity, and see how the Roxas chart will light up like New Year’s Eve fireworks.
