Crackdown on parks, resorts wasting water

- By CHITO CHAVEZ

The El Niño scare has prompted the Quezon City government to plan surprise inspections in the city’s leisure parks and resorts to ensure that their operators adhere to water conservation schemes.

Garry Domingo chief of the city’s Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO), said the move was in response to reports that some of the city’s resorts have overflowing swimming pools, faulty showers, pipe leaks, and wasteful way of watering plants in the city’s vacation facilities.

Members of the Quezon City Council earlier made similar calls to the city government and concerned government agencies.

“We agree with Majority Floor Leader Jesus Manuel Suntay, Minority Floor Leader Allan Benedict Reyes and Councilors Victor Ferrer Jr., Pinggoy Lagumbay and Rannie Ludovica that surprise routine inspections be religiously made in these vacation facilities,’’ Domingo said.

In the past, Quezon City had suffered water shortage due to the steady decline of the water level in the dams supplying water in Metro Manila.

“We have to compel resort owners to save water. They should strictly follow water conservation measures to their customers. It is for everybody’s good,’’ Domingo said.

Domingo said the city government plans to put up signs citing water saving tips to the millions of customers flocking the city’s leisure parks especially during vacation months.

“I will suggest that city officials go down to the barangay and community level for this purpose since water shortage will always be a serious problem,’’ Domingo noted.

Domingo said that the reminders will hopefully encourage the public to realize the importance of saving water to negate the dry spell which had caused considerable public inconvenience.
