World Cup no match for AlDub; Vice Ganda accepts defeat

- By ROBERT R. REQUINTINA and ARGYLL CYRUS B. GEDUCOS

The World Cup proved no match to the tandem of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, collectively known as AlDub, when the pair’s hashtag #ALDubEBTamangPanahon broke the world record for the most number of tweets in 24 hours with 39,430,893 million tweets on October 24, 2015, prompting Vice Ganda of the rival noontime show “It’s Showtime” to concede defeat.

“Alam na po naming talo na kami,” said Vice Ganda during the sixth anniversary show of “It’s Showtime” aired over ABS-CBN on

Saturday. (We know that we have lost.)

If spoiled tweets would be included, the grand total for the AlDub tweets would have been 40.6 million. Spoiled tweets meant incorrect, incomplete or unofficial hashtags). This was confirmed by AlDub Records @IstatistikaGURU.

The FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifier between Brazil and Germany on July 8, 2014 previously held the record for the most number of tweets within a 24-hour period with 35.6 million.

#AlDubEBTamang Panahon reached the 36 million mark at 10:13 p.m. on October 24, 2015.

AlDub fans broke their previous record of 25.6 million tweets which coincided with the National “Pabebe” Wave Day on September 26, 2015.

Fandoms of AlDub went on full beast mode tweeting the official HT, during the live telecast of “Eat Bulaga” benefit show at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan on October 24.

“EB” raised 14 million in ticket sales to help build AlDub libraries nationwide.

Mendoza thanked their legions of fans for supporting the successful EB project.

“Grabe kayo.... Happy 39M tweets, AlDub Nation! Wala talagang imposible sa inyo,” said Mendoza.

Their fans also hoped that the new Philippine record would qualify for the Guinness Book of Records.

‘It’s Showtime’ Vice Ganda also reminded the fans of “It’s Showtime” and “Eat Bulaga” not to fight with one another on social media.

“Hindi niyo ho kailangan makipagaway sa tao kung sino ang number one na noontime show.”

“Kami pong mga host ng Showtime at mga host ng Eat Bulaga! ay di magkakaaway sa totoong buhay.”

“Kaya dapat kayo rin, di kayo magkakaaway.” (You don’t have to fight over which one is the No. 1 noontime show. We, the hosts, actually don’t fight in real life.)

“Kahit nung simula pa. Hindi po naming kayang talunin ang Eat Bulaga. Kahit na magtitiwarik pa kami diyan hindi po namin sila matatalo.” Tulad ng sabi ni Direk Vidanes “Huh? Tatalunin? Hindi kayo inilagay sa noon time show para talunin ang Eat Bulaga.” “Sasamahan niyo lang naman sila sa pagpapasaya!” (From the very start, we knew we could not beat Eat Bulaga. Our director Bobet Vidanes told us we are not on Showtime to beat Eat Bulaga. We join Eat Bulaga in providing entertainment to the public.)

Vice Ganda also said that “Showtime” would not be cancelled as earlier reported.

“Hangga’t may isang taong umaasa para sa ngiti mo, hindi po kami magtatapos,” Vice Ganda said. (For as long as there are people who are relying on us to put a smile on their faces, we will be here.)

Vice Ganda, who spoke for his co-hosts, was reacting to rumors that “Showtime” would be cancelled in December 2015.

Reports said that the noontime show would be reformatted next year with Vice Ganda as the main star but with new co-hosts.

“Paano na lang ho ‘yung mga taong pumunta sa studio? Paano naman ho ‘yung iilan naming fans na nag-aabang ho sa amin?” (We have people inside the studio and outside who rely on us.)

“Maraming, maraming salamat dahil hinahayaan ninyo kami hanggang ngayon na patuluyin sa mga bahay ninyo at sabay-sabay tayong nagtatawanan, sabay-sabay nating dinadama ang good vibes mula Lunes hanggang Sabado sa ‘Showtime’. Maraming salamat po,” Vice Ganda said.
