MB’s Waste Basketball Project fuels proper waste disposal drive
The fifth leg of Manila Bulletin’s (MB) Waste Basketball Project at Robinson’s Magnolia in Quezon City on Saturday attracted mall clients who found the three basketballthemed trash bins too attractive and unique to go unnoticed.
Launched last June, the Waste Basketball Project is MB’s environmental advocacy to raise public awareness on proper waste disposal and segregation as stipulated in the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
The campaign, in partnership with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and Robinson’s Magnolia, also aims to introduce creative way of taking care of the environment through the three big basketball hoop-shaped trash bins designated for paper, cans and plastics.
Thirty-two-year-old Peter Aguinaldo was all smiles as he lifted Kurt, his fiveyear-old son, on his shoulder and assisted him in dunking a paper trash on a basketball trash can labeled for paper-based waste products.
“It is a good way to educate the children on how to properly dispose their waste because they are enjoying how wastes are being disposed,” Aguinaldo said.
Likewise drawn to the innovative waste disposal initiative were friends; Jake Albar, 18; Miguel Carlo Maglalang, 18 and Christian Quinto, 18, who all got curious after spotting the huge waste basketball hoops.
“Basketball is a national addiction in the Philippines and you (MB) were able to mix the idea into waste segregation, so it’s good so many people will learn from it,” Albar explained.
Netizens are also encouraged to take a creative photo of how they do waste segregation with the MB Waste Basketball trash bins and participate in the Waste Basketball Project Social Media Contest.
