National Day of the Republic of Austria
THE Republic of Austria celebrates its National Day today which commemorates the return of Austria to independence after World War II. Also called as Nationalfeirtag in Austria, the National Day is usually celebrated with memorial ceremonies, concerts, lay-wreathing activities at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, and fitness marches (or Fit-Marsche) which attract around 100,000 people. During this day, new recruits of the Austrian Armed Service are sworn in. To promote awareness and knowledge in Austrian history on this event, the parliament building and national museums are open and entrance is free.
As one of the richest nations in the world, Austria has a high standard of living with a very high human development index. The country is a member of various international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Filipino-Austrian relations have always been based on mutual benefit and respect. There are about 35,000 Filipinos in Austria who are engaged largely in the health and service sectors. The Philippine government established its Embassy in Vienna, Austria, in 1973 while the Austrian Embassy in the Philippines was established in 1981. However, as early as 1871, Austria was already represented in the Philippines through an honorary consulate.
We congratulate the government and people of the Republic of Austria led by Federal President Heinz Fishcer, Federal Chancellor Werner Faymann, and National Council President Doris Bures, on the occasion of its National Day.
