Just one jump ahead for Jason Dy
Winning the grand prize in the second season of “The Voice of the Philippines” did not result to a drastic lifestyle change for Jason Dy.
Winning the grand prize in the second season of “The Voice of the Philippines” did not result to a drastic lifestyle change for Jason Dy. In fact, the singer still works for Harana.ph, a website offering, well, harana as novel surprise gift.
“Depende kasi sa occasion eh. Meron po kasing customer na lalaki ang gusto kakanta so, tatawagan nila ako. Puro babae kasi ’yung haranista namin,” said the 25-year-old who’s been with the company for some
twoyears now. Jason, who wasmentored by Pop Star Princess Sarah Geronimo in the competition, is most proud that he is now a “legit singer.”
“Nakakatuwa kasi dati suma-sideline lang ako sa Harana pero ngayon masasabi ko na ang pagkanta ko ay ang magiging hanapbuhay ko na,” he said. Aside from singing on Harana.ph, Jason’s schedule now also includes provincial tours, mall shows, TV appearances and corporate events.
“Marami na po akong napupuntahan na probinsya at kung dati napapanood ko lang ang mga artista sa TV eh, ngayon kasama na ako.
Kasama ko na sila,” he said. The singer has also fulfilled his dream of releasing an album. His eponymous debut CD under MCA Music took some time, unlike those by other “The Voice” contestants, but it was only because Jason was busy with other commitments. Fortunately, the record company also waited for the perfect time to launch it and now everything has fallen into place.
Jason remarked the album showcases his unique qualities as singer and performer. “I made sure na ’yung mga songs na kasama eh, malapit talaga sa akin. Kumbaga magre-reflect sa personality ko kapag narinig nila,” he said. His inspirations for the album are Gary Valenciano and Jay-R. “Si tito Gary po kasi ina-admire ko po ’yung style niya and repertoire. Si Jay-R naman kasi bilang ang genre ko ay R&B,” he said.
Jason is grateful that some people see him as the next Jay-R because of his powerful voice and charisma as R&B singer.
“Happy lang ako na nakikita ng mga tao na pwede akong i-linya sa mga idols ko. Malaki ang respeto ko sa kanila.”
For the album, Jason worked with different artists and he is thankful for their help in achieving his dreams.
“Try and try until you achieve ang ginawa ko. Libre lang naman mangarap. Katulad nang nangyari sa akin, hindi ko naman naisip na mararating ko ’to at magkakaroon ako ng album,” he said. The Butuan City-native understands the road ahead is tough but he’s taking it one step at a time. Aside from releasing an album, Jason also dreams of staging his own concert someday.
“Gusto ko magka-concert na
pinaghandaan at hindi ’yung parang minadali ’yung concept. Gusto ko may quality. So ngayon we are looking for a good concept,” he said.
His debut album carries the songs “Caught In That Feeling” (composed by Roxanne Seeman), “Milagro” (Jungee Marcelo), “When You Hear This Song” (Seeman and Daniel Nitt), “Turn Out The Night” (Seeman, Ivo Moring and Dominic Messinger), “My Bad” (Allan Eshuiji and Greg Ogan), “Walang Iwanan” (Soc Villanueva), “Break My Heart (Some More)” (Villanueva and Kennard Faraon), and his original songs “I Am Something” and “2 Have You.”
The album also includes the bonus track “OMG,” the full recorded version of the song he performed on “The Voice of the Philippines.”
“Jason Dy” is now available in Astroplus and Astrovision stores. It can be streamed on Spinnr, Spotify, VEVO, Deezer and Guevara, and downloaded via Spinner and iTunes.
SURREAL EXPERIENCE
Jason was one of the artists that performed during David Foster’s Manila concert last August. He sang Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.”
He was randomly picked from the crowd by the award-winning songwriter-producer himself.
“I was in the patron area nu’n. As in malayo talaga ako sa stage nu’n. Tapos ayun nagtawag siya ng singer na pwedeng kumanta. Tapos tinuturo ako ng mga kasama ko,” he said. Luckily, Jason was prepared. “Kasi alam ko na kapag nagkoconcert siya sa ibang bansa, nagtatawag din siya kaya nag-ready din ako,” he said. After performing, he recalled David asking the audience why Jason received more applause than him when he was the one who wrote the song.
“Sinabi lang ng audience na ako daw ’yung nanalo sa ‘The Voice.’ Tumawa lang siya,” he said.
