PNoy recommends book on Aquino legacy, Marcos dictatorship to BBM

He still couldn’t get over Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s refusal to apologize for the atrocities during the martial law regime.

In an effort to remind the senator about the true picture of the Marcos dictatorship, President Aquino decided to recommend a new book “The Aquino Legacy: An Enduring Narrative” to his political opponent.

The book, written by Elfren Sicangco Cruz and Neni Sta. Romana Cruz, features a collection of historical accounts and commentaries about the nation’s struggle to fight the martial law regime and restore democracy in the country.

“There is a particular candidate for next year’s elections, who says repeatedly that he is ready and willing to say sorry, if he only knew what there is to apologize for,” Aquino said during the book launch held at the Raffles Hotel in Makati City last Thursday night.

“Upon hearing this, I really had to ask myself: When you cannot admit a mistake, are you not guaranteeing the repetition of that mistake? Perhaps this book can help to enlighten him and add to his knowledge of our past,” Aquino added.

The President earlier said the Marcos family must apologize for the martial law abuses committed during the time of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. The son and namesake of the dictator however insisted that he has nothing to apologize for.

The President said he hopes the new book would fill the “vacuum of knowledge” about the significant events in the country’s history. The book includes accounts about “the dark days of Martial Law,” and the challenges the late President Corazon Aquino faced in restoring and safeguarding democracy which the people won from “the iron fist of the dictator.”

Aquino said he hopes the book would be a “jumping-off point for Filipinos, especially those from the younger generation: that they will be encouraged to learn from the past, and consequently, to do their part in ensuring that the country can look forward to a far brighter future.”

While mentioning the book was written with its own personal bias or viewpoint, the President cautioned the public against others who seek to spread propaganda and change history for their selfish interest.
