PNoy honors PDI Editor-in-Chief Letty Jimenez Magsanoc
President Aquino gave honor yesterday to Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc, former editor of the Philippine Panorama of the Manila Bulletin and longtime editor-in-chief of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), and said he was shocked at her “sudden passing” on Christmas Eve.
“I am shocked by the sudden passing of Letty Jimenez Magsanoc,” Aquino said in a statement yesterday.
The President expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues of Magsanoc following her death at the St. Luke’s Global City.
“My thoughts and prayers are with her family and all her colleagues in the Philippine Daily Inquirer at this time of profound sadness and loss,” he said.
Aquino honored Magsanoc for being a source of strength to all Filipinos who love freedom, democracy, and good governance.
“One always knew that with her, the truth was the benchmark of a journalist’s efforts; and that in all that she did, there was no higher cause than the country’s welfare and that of our people,” Aquino said.
The President also remembered Magsanoc as a frank person “yet with deep understanding.”
Aquino assured Magsanoc’s colleagues that they “are not alone” in their time of mourning.
He also called on all Filipinos to imbibe Magsanoc’s courage and fight for freedom and democracy.
“We are all called to living up to her courageous example, one that will continue to inspire all of us to fight for freedom by ensuring we have a discerning and informed public,” Aquino said.
“May she rest in peace and her example lend us strength in continuing to ensure we have a nation that is always free to speak its mind,” he said.
Magsanoc’s career in journalism started in 1969 when she joined the Manila Bulletin and then became the editor for Panorama from 1976 to 1981. She was also editor of the Mr. & Ms. Special Edition from 1983 to 1986 and then EIC of the Sunday Inquirer Magazine from 1986 to 1987. Magsanoc had been EIC of the PDI since 1991.
The wake is set to begin tomorrow at the Aeternum Heritage Park in Taguig City.
