When angels sing

- By REGINA MAE PARUNGAO

Ever heard the voice of an angel? How about a choir of angels? Well, we haven’t – maybe once, in a dream. In any case, we have heard something we believe comes close in Londonbased choir, Libera.

Ever heard the voice of an angel? How about a choirh i of f angels?g l ? Well,W ll we haven’t – maybe once, in a dream. In any case, we have heard something we believe comes close in London-based choir, Libera.

This group of young English vocalists spreads love, happiness and hope singing innovatively arranged music, just as we imagine angels would.

Conceptualized by Mestro Robert Prizeman, who also acts as musical director, the group’s members are ages seven to 16 and, on the whole, there’s around 40 of them. Almost all their songs are either new compositions by Prizeman or new arrangements of classical and contemporary tunes.

In addition to recording albums, touring and regular TV appearances, Libera does weekly parish choral services. Speaking to Bulletin Entertain

ment, Isaac London, one of the group members, shared how they find joy in spreading cheer wherever they perform.

“A lot of sad things happen (around the world), sometimes with natural disaster, tsunamis and so on; a lot of people are in tough situations… So, it’s lovely that people will say, ‘ You really help me to get through with your music’; It is the biggest thing we could do to help people,” he noted.

The boys have been described as “normal and “ordinary.” However, when they perform on stage in their distinctive white robes, they produce music both stirring and comforting.

London maintained they still go about their daily lives as normal boys despite their popularity. The only difference is they are excused from school when they go on tour, which usually happens three times a year.

When asked if they are at all pressured by their busy schedules, London said, “Definitely no.”

It helps that the members act as each other’s support system. “We are like a family here,” London maintained.

With their success, the boys have only one wish and that is to someday perform for the Pope.

Libera is in town for a couple of shows. This is actually the fourth visit to the country, but their first for Valentine’s.

If you are eager to hear the sound of angels singing, you can catch Libera today at the Center Stage SM seaside city, Cebu. Part of the proceeds of the concert will benefit Caritas Manila, Children’s Hour, Foundation For Dis- advantaged Children, Saint Theresa’s College - Cebu Foundation Inc. and Arts of Council of Cebu Foundation Inc.
