32 sites in Region 7 eyed for election watchlist inclusion
CEBU CITY — At least 32 cities and municipalities in Central Visayas have been identified as possible watchlist areas in connection with the May, 2016 elections.
The Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7) is recommending these 32 areas for inclusion in the Commission on Elections (Comelec) poll watchlist on the basis of their history of intense political rivalries.
Of these 32 areas, 18 are in Cebu, eight in Bohol, and six in Siquijor.
PRO-7 Director, Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan stressed that the areas eyed for inclusion in the election watchlist are just a recommendation and it will be up to the Regional Joint Security Coordinating Council to make final assessment of the areas.
Gaerlan said the Council, composed of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Philippine National Police, may or may not approve the recommendation.
He also said the 32 areas in Central Visayas have been identified under category one, or areas with intense political rivalries.
Gaerlan said he has encouraged the police in these areas to come up with initiatives that would allow these rival groups to settle existing conflicts among themselves without using violence and for representatives from the religious sector to mediate, if necessary.
The official added that he has ordered more checkpoints to prevent movements of armed groups and other criminal elements which may be used by politicians in the elections this coming May.
Gaerlan said they are beefing up preparations and mapping out contingency plans with the Comelec and the AFP. Intelligence operatives are also gathering information to prevent the intrusion or formation of private armed groups.
