PMSEA cites operations and environmental programs of CEMEX

Apo Cement Corporation, a member of CEMEX Philippines Group of Companies, was again a recipient of environmental excellence awards from the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA).

Apo Cement Corporation, the maker of the first eco-labeled cement brand APO Cement, bagged three notable awards namely the Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award (PMIEA) 2015 – Platinum, Best Mining Forest Award, and Safest Mineral Processing Award (Cement Plant Category).

Apo Cement officials received the PMIEA 2015 (Platinum) recognition for its excellent track record on safe and responsible operations, reforestation programs, environmental law compliance, and community engagement initiatives among others.

Moreover, Apo Cement was particularly cited for the Best Mining Forest category for its maintenance and protection program, nursery projects, and biodiversity consideration. In fact, Apo Cement was given a perfect score for biodiversity consideration because the diverse species that are relevant to trees, shrubs, and grasses are thriving in the plantation areas. There are also sightings of endemic trees and wildlife migration like the Chinese Egret found at the cement plant’s lagoon.

Adding feather to the cap is the Safest Mineral Processing Award to Apo Cement for its impressive safety and health program and safety performance. The award recognizes mining companies that support the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) program to reforest or afforest mined- out areas, slopes, decommissioned tailings ponds, causeways and waste dumps, and vacant lots inside or nearby mining communities.

Mines and Geosciences Bureau ( MGB) Director Leo Jasareno and PMSEA President Louie Sarmiento awarded the recognition to Apo Cement Corporation in the recently concluded 62nd Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference in Camp John Hay, Baguio City.

CEMEX Philippines is the manufacturer of the first eco-labeled cement brands in the country including Island Portland Cement, Palitada King, Rizal Portland Super, Rizal Masonry Cement, APO Portland Premium, APO Portland Cement, APO Masonry Cement, and APO Pozzolan.

The 62nd Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference awarding ceremony was attended by the leaders and officers of the Apo Cement Corp. which include Atty. Maria Virginia Eala (3rd from right), Vice President for Human Resources and Gery Rota (right), Director of Apo Cement Plant. Fernando Enriquez, Vice President for Operations and Technology, also flew all the way from Colombia to grace the event.
