Radio group’s confab focuses on disaster preparedne­ss

The Commercial & Amateur Radio Transceive­r Dealers Associatio­n of the Philippine­s ( CARTDAPI) is conducting a three- day convention that started yesterday at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

The three- day convention, carrying the theme “Beyond Response: Ready, Recover, Rebuild,” aims to spread awareness on the importance of disaster resilience in achieving a high human survival rate after calamities, as well as highlight communicat­ion tools as a critical component for disaster management and response.

Rachel Syfargo said that the group is encouragin­g local government units ( LGUs) to set up cell sites in their respective areas as well as having a two-way radios which serves an important communicat­ion tools during disasters.

Syfargo said that annually, their group is urging local government units(LGUs) volunteer groups and the general public to focus on disaster preparedne­ss, recovery and rebuilding.

She also said that this year, they a made more determined call on all LGUs in setting up their own cell sites after the announceme­nt of Phivolcs made last year of the Big One or the worst earthquake that could happen due to the West Valley Fault, a 100-kilometer fault that runs through six cities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

CARTDAPI defined disaster resilience as the ability of individual­s, communitie­s, organizati­on and states to adapt to and recover from hazards, shocks and stresses without compromisi­ng long-term prospects for developmen­t and rebuilding.

“With extreme weather events and disasters becoming more and more common, RADSHOW 2016 of the CARTDAPI is focused on strengthen­ing our country’s resilience versus these calamities. We are bringing together industry experts who will share their best practices so we can minimize risk and bounce back should these disasters occur,” said Syfargo quoting CARTDAPI President Engr. Cecile Oreta-Rivera.
