NPC deploys genset in Mindoro to back demand increase

To underpin demand hike in the area during the summer months, state-run National Power Corporation (NPC) has deployed additional generating set of 600-kilowatt (kW) capacity for Lubang Island in Occidental Mindoro.

The power firm said this would ensure a more stable electricity supply for this island- grid jurisdiction during the summer months.

Currently, it was emphasized that the dependable capacity of the Lubang diesel power plant, which has been serving the island’s power requirements, is rated at 1,400kw.

The area’s demand is at 850kw and supplies to about 5,810 households over 24-hour duration of electricity service.

According to NPC president Ma. Gladys Cruz-Sta. Rita, the company “expedited the hauling of the new genset to the island to avoid service interruption especially now that we are anticipating a surge in demand due to the summer season.”

Sta. Rita further enthused that “summer in Lubang Island does not only mean higher power consumption due to the heat but also more tourists to visit the place.”

Lubang Island is known for its tourism draw because of various activities and scenic spots that it can offer to visitors.

Primarily, the island is distinguished for its Onoda Trail, named after a Japanese soldier who lived in the jungles for 30 years even post-World War II clinging to the belief that world war was still on.

In many off-grid areas in the country, the state-run firm has been striving to stretch their electricity service not just for a half-day duration or 12 hours, but possibly longer at 16 hours or 24 hours when feasible.

To augment their capacities, the company has been deploying gensets to various areas following assessments of their corresponding needs. (MMV)
