Lady Spikers seek redemption

Games Today (The Arena, San Juan) 2 p.m. – UE vs UST 4 p.m. – La Salle vs FEU

La Salle hopes to erase the stigma of a shock three-set defeat to University of Santo Tomas last Wednesday as it opens the second round against Far Eastern University today in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Spikers need to recover the form they showed in blasting twotime defending champion and bitter rival Ateneo Lady Eagles last week if they want to get back on winning track in their 4 p.m. showdown with the Lady Tamaraws.

A stunning win would put FEU, tied for third with University of the Philippines at 4-3, in a tie for second with La Salle (5-2).

UST’s shocking upset of La Salle gave Ateneo the top spot after the first round at 6-1 despite the straight-loss to La Salle that ended its 24-game winning streak since its breakthrough title win in 2014.

UST, on the other hand, is out to dish out the same type of zest and confidence against winless University of the East in the hope of catching up the frontrunners in the exciting race for the Final Four berths.

Their morale boosted by a 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 over the Lady Spikers, the Golden Tigresses target their first back-to-back wins of the season against a team which dropped 52 straight games dating back to 2012 season.

Looking lost and distraught due to their slow start this season, the Golden Tigresses were again golden – thanks to the impressive performances of EJ Laure, Carmela Tunay and league’s top scorer Cherry Rondina.

But after their huge win over the Lady Spikers, their faithful are hoping that this is the beginning of something wonderful for them.
