Iloilo province election winners proclaimed

ILOILO CITY - Lawyer Wil Arceño, Commission on Elections (Comelec-Iloilo) officer, said all winning provincial election candidate in the province were proclaimed last Thursday, May 12.

Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. was reelected through a landslide victory.

Defensor garnered a total of 705,151 votes while his closest rivals, retired police chief Gil Lebin Jr. and peanut vendor Diopito Gonzales, got over 14,000 votes each.

Mayor Christine Garin of Guimbal is the incoming vice governor. Mayor Garin defeated incumbent Iloilo 5th district Rep. Niel “Junjun” Tupas Jr., a close ally of President Aquino.

Garin garnered 474,328 votes while Rep. Tupas only got 318,409 votes.

Iloilo 1st district Rep. Richard Garin was also reelected. Garin, the husband of Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Janette Loreto-Garin, garnered a total of 133,811 votes.

Likewise reelected were Iloilo 2nd district Rep. Arcadio Gorriceta and Iloilo 3rd District Rep. Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr.

Gorriceta earned 99,957 votes while Defensor Jr., son of the reelected governor, got 148,941 votes.

Former Representa­tive Dr. Ferjenel “Ferj” Biron is the newly elected congressio­nal representa­tive of Iloilo’s 4th district. Biron garnered 108,394 votes.

Iloilo Vice Governor Raul “Boboy” Tupas is the newly elected congressio­nal representa­tive of Iloilo’s 5th district. He garnered 117,610 votes.

He defeated lawyer Yvonne Angeli “Gel” Lee-Tupas, wife of his older brother and incumbent Rep. Niel Tupas.

Elected to the Iloilo Provincial Board are Marcelo Valentine Serag and Renee Valencia for 1st district, Demy Sonza and Liecel MondejarSe­ville for 2nd district; Lorenz Defensor and Manny Gallar for 3rd district; Bryant Paul Biron and Domingo Oso for 4th district; and Nielo Tupas and Jeneda Salcedo-Orendain for 5th district.

Over in Aklan, the list of winners include reelected Governor Florencio “Joeben” Miraflores, Atty. Reynaldo “Boy” Quimpo (vice governor), former governor Carlito “Lito” Marquez (lone Congressio­nal district seat), reelected Mayor William Lachica and Vice Mayor Madeline Regalado of Kalibo and former mayor Ceciron “Dodong” Cawaling,who defeated incumbent Mayor John Yap of Malay town, which covers the world renowned Boracay Island. .
