Arum tantalized by Pacquiao-Floyd II

- By NICK GIONGCO BOB ARUM

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum said he is leaving Manny Pacquiao undisturbed for the next few days or weeks.

“Let him have his moment,” Arum said yesterday from Hong Kong where he is staging a Top Rank-promoted show tonight headlined by rising Chinese star Rex Tso.

However, Arum said that he may have to confer with Pacquiao one last time to determine if his decision to retire from the sport is cast in stone.

Arum said that he has a scheduled meeting late this month in the US with a group that is clamoring for Pacquiao to return to the ring.

Pacquiao announced his retirement after easily beating Tim Bradley during their third fight last month in Las Vegas.

The 37-year-old Pacquiao is expected to be declared a senator by the Commission of Elections as the Sarangani representative has so far garnered more than 15 million votes, which is good for seventh place.

Owing to the developments the last few weeks, it is apparent that a proposed showdown with Mexican hero Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won't happen as he is likely headed for a meeting with Gennady Golovkin.

As for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, who beat him in what went down as the richest fight ever, it remains a possibility.

“We’ll soon know the real score with Mayweather,” said the 84-year-old Arum, who intends to lay down everything sometime in June.

“I will talk to him after I canvass everything.”

But everything would all come down to Pacquiao’s decision, noted Arum, who says he won’t be surprised if the eight-division champion doesn’t change his mind owing to the demanding role of a senator.

“In the end, it’s Manny’s call.”
