Globalport names Jarencio basketball operations head
Globalport yesterday appointed former coach Pido Jarencio as head of basketball operation as it continues to improve the team’s composition for the coming PBA conferences.
No less than Globalport team owner Mikee Romero, a representative of the newly-elected 1Pacman party list, made the announcement yesterday even as the Batang Pier continue to search for a new coach before the season-ending Governors’ Cup starts in July.
“I’m very thankful for Pido for all the sacrifices he made and for helping us reach the semis of the Philippine Cup,” said Romero, referring to Jarencio guiding Globalport to its first semifinal appearance in the Philippine Cup last January.
Globalport lost to Alaska in that semifinal series, 4-1, before struggling in the recently-concluded Commissioner’s Cup by going 2-9 marred by injuries to top guards Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle.
Globalport representative and PBA Vice-chairman Erick Arejola said that Jarencio’s task is to look for players that would fit to the team’s style of play under the next coach.
The Batang Pier is mulling whether to appoint Jarencio’s former assistants Johnedel Cardel or Eric Gonzales as possible replacement.
“He will be more active because he has been named chief of our basketball operations. Pido’s main task is to make the team more competitive,” said Arejola as the team considers assistant coaches Johnedel Cardel and Erick Gonzales as possible replacement of Jarencio.
The team recently got key players through different trades, obtaining forward Ronald Pascual and former center Yousef Taha from the Star Hotshots for forward Keith Jensen and guard Jonathan Uyloan.
